      <image:caption>After my second daughter I met by chance a therapist at a work event that ended up being so pivotal to my recovery and mental health. Ruth was the support I knew I wanted but didn’t know I would need until I was in the mist of post partum depression. Mine was relatively late onset. After getting my daughter through the worst of her milk allergy and reflux, my body and mind began to push back. I’m so grateful I already had the support of Ruth in place to recognise something was off. Everyone’s journey is different and I think everyone needs different support to help them through their own challenges, I decide not to medicate (for better or worse) and that made my journey to recovery very much about talking but I was able to recover slowly with her help. She’s a very special person.</image:caption>

It helped me to understand when I needed to seek help for my babies, as well as how to create positive routines when they were well. Our kids are still great sleepers despite reflux and milk allergies, which I totally credit to her system. I love our bath and bed routine. It’s joyful and familiar.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I was talking to someone about this recently. Becoming a mother for the first time can feel like starting a new job in a field you have no idea about. It’s like failing and learning and succeeding every day, over and over. Not to mention the physical exhaustion of your body recovering from pregnancy and birth, huge hormonal shifts and lack of sleep. For me it was one of the most challenging moments of converging pressures. It was easy to self critique and doubt myself as a person and a mother. But I believe being reborn after children takes time. It has taken be years to shed who I used to be and emerge as the version of myself for this next chapter. Sometimes I’m not enough and sometimes I worry I’m too much. Being a mother teaches me everyday to be comfortable in the uncomfortable.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The first weeks after birth are so beautiful, and while there is a huge physical and emotional toll, those early days really do revolve around rest and recovery. Despite being up all night, I loved every moment of the baby bubble. Normally my life is incredibly busy due to my work, and having this period to simply be with my new baby was a total joy. My team initiated a black out - they knew I wouldn’t resist keeping an eye on things, and they took me off emails and made new slack channels without me. It was such a sweet gesture, which helped a lot. A support network is crucial to recovery, and I was lucky to have family around, and a wonderful maternity nurse to help. I prioritised sleep when I could, and not overexerting - if I didn’t feel like visitors I would say so!</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I have now had two children, and I feel a lot more settled now than I did after my first. The identity shift to becoming a mother is so significant, and takes time to come to terms with how your life is changed (forever!). I struggled after my first, and it took probably a year or more to grow into my new identity and build my confidence as a mother. I thought I had to try to maintain both for a while… Having my second child was a lot easier emotionally, and I am much better at setting boundaries and priorities. Given my professional life is demanding, my social life has taken more of a backseat and I love spending time with my family. When I do go out, it's with my great friends, or for special occasions - and I’m super happy with that.</image:caption>

We have incredible therapists on Ruuby who I would book religiously - including Daria and Ranju for reflexology, and Vanessa and Yanny for Brazilian Lymphatic.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>When you are a mother, you are always on - physically and emotionally. In order to be fully present, engaged and happy, ensuring your own wellness is crucial. I value my own wellbeing so much more than I did before I had children, as I know I need to feel 100% to manage my days - and there are no such thing as days lying in bed to recover from a cold anymore… You don’t need much, but you do need time for yourself. An hour here or there for a massage or walk in the park does wonders. After I had my first child, Penelope (in 2020 - so Covid era), I was getting ill all the time and it made life incredibly difficult. I spent a lot of time rebuilding my immune system, and now have a really great supplement stack that makes me feel great. While everyone’s needs are different, I swear by Artah electrolytes, Body Bio PC, Chlorella, Iron (sometimes) and Vitamin C. If my brain needs a boost, I’ll take some methylene blue (although this is a little controversial). I take joy in slowing down, and I listen to my body when it needs to rest - something I used to override constantly before children.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Anabel was born in deep winter and close to Christmas so I remember it got dark very early and naturally felt like a time to hibernate. I was lucky that my husband was able to be home with me those first couple of weeks and we spent the time very much cocooned in our new little world. We’d filled the freezer beforehand with lots of dahls and nourishing soups which was everything I craved in the early days of recovery. I had a c-section birth and I remember being eager to heal so that I could move my body. Exercise has always been the way that I unwind and I knew that I would find the recovery a challenge. I made sure to sleep as much as I could but also to try and get outside whenever I could. I still remember the first time that I left the house just to walk five minutes down the road to the pharmacy. It felt like a huge milestone at the time and was incredibly grounding.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I was lucky to have some amazing community midwives who were so kind and generous with their wisdom and emotion. I always felt like I’d been seen and heard after they visited but I almost wish I could have seen them more or for longer and of course they have lots of new mothers to check in on. There is so much that goes on for you emotionally once you have a child and I think it’s really important to have an outlet and ear outside of your partner to talk to. If I could wave a magic wand I’d make sure that every new mother had weekly support with someone to just listen to them and guide them in those very early stages of motherhood.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>From a knowledge perspective I wish I had known more about what to expect, though I wonder if every mother feels the same because it is such a shock to the system. I think we’re pretty informed about what to do up to the birth but it feels like immediately after birth there is just a drop off of information and what we should expect. There were a few complications when I had my son so we had to stay in the hospital for 5 days, which at the time was quite jarring but at the same time was comforting to have the support of the midwives who would constantly check on us. A few months after the fact I could look back and say, I really needed that. My situation was a little different because I’m from South Africa and didn’t have any of my family around me in London during that postnatal period due to it being the Covid years. If I had had my mum, my sisters and my aunts around maybe I would have felt a little less at sea. My husband was amazing and did everything he could, but there are just certain things you need the women in your life for, or women who can care for you, to be around for. I remember a friend said to me, just before I gave birth, if things are feeling tricky, just whisper to yourself ‘this too shall pass’ and that massively helped me, and it's something I've gone on to share with new mothers.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I took quite a lot of time off for maternity leave and towards the end I started feeling like I was losing myself a little and I needed to get back to that other part of myself and go back to work. When I did get back to work I felt that I had something that was just for me and I felt a sense of self again, not that you don’t have that as a mother, it’s a beautiful thing, but I didn’t want to lose myself in motherhood. That’s not to cast aspersions on any mother that chooses to stay home with their child and forego the career aspect, that’s totally fine and I have huge respect for that. But for me, my career is such an intrinsic part of who I am and I really enjoyed getting back to it. The moments that I was away from my child also made me miss him more so. To have both of those worlds works really well for me.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Initially my son was with a childminder because I felt a smaller setting was good for him and then when he was 2, we put him into nursery and had wraparound care. I wouldn’t have been able to do it without that support. Culturally in South Africa you typically have someone at home who helps you with your children. It absolutely is a privilege given the financial implications. Structurally the childcare system in the UK doesn’t support women returning to work when their children are young and so you need wraparound care if you want to do that. Childcare can be very prohibitively expensive in the UK. We spent time with Swedish friends of ours recently and saw how different it is there where there is so much support and the cost of childcare is a lot more manageable. The primary focus of that system is supporting women back in to the workplace which is ultimately better for the economy and everyone in society. It’s an impossible ask for women here and can make us feel like we’re not doing enough, when the reality is there is just not enough support. I think a lot of strides have been taking in the workplace to improve equality and flexible working but there is still a long way to go.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I think there is a lot of focus on postpartum depression (rightly so) but less on other mental health conditions. I know about postpartum anxiety only because I struggled with that for a long time and no one quite caught on to it during any of the checks I had. The only person that twigged that something was up, was a doctor we saw for my son who recognised I was struggling with it and gently suggested I speak to someone. I was so grateful because it felt like someone was giving me permission to acknowledge it and put a name to it. Off the back of that I was able to get help but that was almost 2 years in so I had been living with it without support for such a long time. It feels like the primary concern for medical professionals is, can you care for your child? Can you feed them? Which is great but I think there is a very big chasm between that and the concern for the person doing the caring of the child.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>My thoughts on this are informed by some advice my aunt gave me - put yourself first and everything else will follow, your marriage, children, all of it. Basically make sure you’re looking after yourself. I try to put my mental, physical and emotional health first because I know if I’m good then I can look after them too and give them the attention that they need. It’s not easy but I’ve become quite regimented about it. I know in the morning I need to exercise or go for a run to keep my mind clear and I know I need to have a few hours for myself at the weekend. My husband also recognises that I need that, to recalibrate and he's my biggest champion in this regard, actively supporting me because he knows how important it is to me. It took me a while to find my stride but I feel like we’re here now, at least for now.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I would want other mothers to know that it’s really important to take your time with recovery and rest. I am generally not very good at accepting help and have this stoic mentality of wanting to do everything but I think what I learned more and more with each baby was that in order to be the best possible mother you have to be able to rest and accept help whenever you can, to allow yourself to be vulnerable and accept that you have some days which are tougher than others, otherwise you end up spreading yourself too thin. That there is no timeline for how you feel, I felt differently after each of my births. I vividly remember a day when my fourth baby was a few weeks old and I was trying to be everything for everyone and the chaos and noise was so full on. So I think mothers knowing that they should take ALL the time they need is really important.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>All in all I had a hugely positive experience. Pre having children I had suffered with anxiety for a few years, and having a true meaning and focus in my life literally took away that anxiety overnight (I know it can be the opposite for many women) but I saw myself in a very positive light, I felt like I was being the best version of myself by having children that I could devote my love and attention to. On the negative side, I guess your body changing is always challenging. I’ve always loved exercising and was so unwell with 3/4 pregnancies that I didn’t have the energy to regularly exercise and I always found that I sort of lost myself for a while after each baby. But I think it’s so important to remember that going through pregnancy and childbirth is a HUGE change both physically and emotionally and you do eventually find yourself again.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I think working for myself and having a job that I love (I never really took time off) always helped me to find myself again. Also having a really great group of friends and being sociable helps too. After my third daughter was born I became really insular for a while and stayed at home most of the time and I think it’s so important when you feel ready to actually get back into social relationships even if it’s just having a coffee with a friend. It’s always really useful to open up to people whether that’s friends, family or a professional.</image:caption>
